Massachusetts Statewide Poetry Calendar 2

The Medford Senior Center presents Poetry in Pictures, led by award-winning photographer and published poet Robert Castagna. Ever imagine writing a poem that drew a picture in another person’s mind? Or imagine combining your photographs with your words? In this class, you will creatively write and put your poetic voices to images of your choosing. Whether old photographs or newly taken ones, your voice and images will emerge from the shadows, as Robert helps you see pictures and words in new ways. Winter is a great time of year for connecting with nature! It’s quieter; the bare tree branches offer a clearer view of birds in their winter plumage; fallen leaves protect a hidden universe of overwintering bees and other small creatures; the tracks in the snow tell the stories of all the animals around us. And we’re animals too—this is often a time of year when we also slow down, try to stay warm, spend time reflecting on our lives, look forward to the sun and rejuvenation of spring.
Let’s explore our connections to nature in the winter! This is an opportunity to spend time learning about Massachusetts nature in winter, and then we’ll use our observations and thoughts about nature to create poetry. We will read and talk about poetry that explores nature in the winter. Then, depending on the weather, we’ll go outside to observe our surroundings together or stay indoors and explore some natural materials and artifacts together. Participants can then choose a writing prompt and write/wander on their own. Finally, we’ll reconvene to talk about our experiences, and participants are welcome to share anything they write. No experience needed to write poetry—everyone is welcome!
